SL Pathfinding Update: No Negative Impact on Almost All Existing SL Content, Says Lorca Linden

SL Pathfinding Update: No Negative Impact on Almost All Existing SL Content, Says Lorca Linden

The Linden Lab developer known as Lorca Linden has an informative updateon the new Second Life object pathfinding feature in the comments of the blog of Nalates Urriah. ("Although Lindens do not generally post on Resident blogs," he begins, "I am going to make an exception in this one case." Why this is a general rule, I have no idea.) Despite earlier fears, Lorca says pathfinding performances is generally performing well:
Region crash rates – excluding a bumpy couple hours during the roll out – remain low. All of this is to say that as far as the Lab can tell, Pathfinding has not had a negative performance or stability impact in the vast majority of situations... I also want to make clear that the impact on some vehicles is not directly related to pathfinding per say but rather the underlying physics and terrain optimizations that made pathfinding possible and have benefits beyond pathfinding. As far as we can tell, only a small percentage of existing content is affected by this physics upgrade.

Even Years After Leaving Linden, Lindens are Still Lindens

Lindens are Still Lindens

So last Thursday, some robots, elves, kung fu masters, disco queens, a few furries and a rock god walked into a bar, but that's not the set-up for a joke, and since this happened in San Francisco, that's a fairly typical Thursday anyway -- it was the (now annual) Linden Lab alumni party, and several dozen Lindens were in attendance. Some Lindens in these photos are still active duty Lindens, but most have gone on to other things, such as work at Twitter, Google, and various tech/game companies, while some (by which I mean me) hover between many worlds (including the one that brought us all together in the first place). Many Lindens who came have been Lindens for nearly 10 years (if not longer), and any time I go to these reunions, it's striking to me how so many of us maintain this identity and social affiliation as part of who we are. (Seriously, how many people would still attend a reunion party based around another company, years after they left it?) For myself (and I suspect for many others at this party), the Linden title is a rare and special thing, one that can never be repeated elsewhere, and will stay with us for the rest of our careers.
Anyway, more Lindens after the break. I'm curious if any readers can identify them all by name. (I actually can't.)

Promo Bare Tip Toe Foot - L$10

[AL] Promo Bare Tip Toe Foot - Foot Attach

Thank you for your interest in the Promo Bare Tip Toe Foot,
Firstly I need to say that this promo foot is being sold at a lower price to get feed back on the new texture used for the skin. Reviews are helpful, but I would appreciate if you could also contact me in world with a note card. The reason for this is to find out how versatile this texture is. Especially for those that wear a luminous skin, or pale blues, grays or pinks. There is a slight shine to this texture, hopefully following through from most skins down the front and rear of the leg. I know it is very difficult to get the ' perfect ' match, but in my test, from a normal viewing range (not zoomed in) on my viewer they seem to work well. Hence the promo for feed back from You. Pictures taken in medium graphics using light (face light) so far the texture seems to hold up well, changing colour with your skin in surrounding lights! I will put on sale two versions of this foot, one that attaches to the foot (no foot lock animation) and one that attaches to the lower leg. These feet are NOT a demo, and will include resize option (found by clicking each foot) and a skin tone hud. Please note for fitting smaller avs, when wearing alpha layer the foot will need to adjusted up, with invisiprims adjusted down, in most cases.
Thank you in advance Abi.

NWN in Japanese: Philip Rosedale: Second Life

NWN in Japanese: Philip Rosedale: Second Lifeの利用時間が、20億時間を越えた。

Future Phoenix Viewer Development in Peril?

Future Phoenix Viewer Development in Peril?

Tonya Souther, a leading developer for the Phoenix Viewer, a third party viewer for Second Life that's far more popular than the official SL viewer, on her blog suggests that future development of Phoenix may be in peril. This is due to some recent technical changes Linden Lab is making to future viewer development, which she also explains in the post, but the upshot for her is this:

[W]hat I'm about to say is my own personal opinion, and not that of the Phoenix Viewer Project. The group has not made any decisions yet. To me, it's time to say that we are not going to put any more effort into Phoenix... As far as I'm concerned, it's time to put Phoenix to rest. The developers don't like working in the codebase, as in many ways it's an unmaintainable tissue of hacks, the support team barely remembers how to run it, and Firestorm now provides essentially all of the function Phoenix has and much more besides.
Read it all here. If I'm reading right, Phoenix fans will have to transition to Firestorm, the most updated version of the Phoenix Viewer Project viewers, which may make some Phoenix fans' phlegm fly.

SLCC for 2012 Cancelled (Which is Probably Just as Well)

SLCC for 2012 Cancelled

(Which is Probably Just as Well)

Second Life Community Convention 2011
Get a good look at the Second Life Community Convention banner above, because it looks like the last you'll see -- citing unspecified "changes in the terms of the contract offered by Linden Lab this year", past SLCC producer AvaCon has passed on producing another SLCC this year. Given that wording, it sounds like Linden Lab was making some significant demands to AvaCon to guarantee the company's continued participation. I'm personally sad to see SLCC cancelled (and have a lot of warm memories of SLCCs past), but it's hard to be surprised that it won't go on:
With the almost complete erosion of enterprise/large organization participation in Second Life in the last couple years, SLCC lost potential registrations from people who could get their attendance covered by their employers, or at least written off as a business expense. That leaves SL entrepreneurs and hardcore SL fans as potential attendees, but asking them to spend $1500 or more on registration/travel/hotel while we're still amid a recession seems like a non-starter.
But the real problem, I think, is that Linden Lab has lost any real interest in being involved with the user community. Still enormously profitable, the company could easily defray most costs associated with a real world convention with the amount of revenue it makes from SL in a few days. At some point, the company decided there wasn't enough ROI around SLCC, which is probably true from a strict revenue perspective. But it seems to me it would still be a worthwhile investment in the SL brand (which is tarnished) and its hardcore customer base (which is still engaged, if floundering).

Top Second Life Sims - June 2012

Top Second Life Sims by Popularity for June 2012

Courtesy Louis Platini's Metaverse Business, a Second Life/OpenSim analytics company that gathers publicly accessible in-world data for its clients, here's the top 25 most popular SL sims from last month, listed according to their average avatar visitor count at any given period:

Warning: Despite Linden Lab's prohibition against traffic-gaming bots, several sims are often reported to be full of them. (Somewhat ironically, Metaverse Business' traffic-counting bots cannot detect the world's traffic-gaming bots.)
As I often ask with these reports, anyone been to any of these that are worth the 15-20 minute effort that a visit often requires?

SL Social Network: Less Than 100K Users, Says Google

SL Social Network: Less Than 100K Users, Says GoogleSecond Life social network

So I wondered last week how many people are actually using my.secondlife.com, the internal SL social network, on a regular basis, and here's a pretty good estimate: According to Google Ad Planner, the site gets about 84K monthly visitors, with 32K of those from the US. Yes yes, a site user is not the same as a registered user with their own profile and such, and so the number of people actually using the social network to post updates and such is likely less than 84K. (Significantly less, I'd wager.) That said, traffic approaching 100K is pretty good, especially if you assume the active, meaningful Second Life userbase is probably 400K monthly uniques. So overall, it's not a bad idea to create a my.secondlife.com profile of your own, especially if you're an SL content creator. In which case, follow Cajsa's advice.

Then again, if you take Google's numbers to be reliable, you probably don't want to spend too much time doing so:

Average visitor time on my.secondlife.com is 7:10 to 8:40 minutes, which seems pretty good. Then again, Plurk, a social network uniquely popular with SLers, has visitor times in the 10:40 to 11:40 range.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed annually in the United States on the last Monday of May.[1] Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.[2] Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. As a marker it typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.
Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.[3]
By the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as people visited the graves of their deceased relatives in church cemeteries, whether they had served in the military or not. It also became a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family gatherings, fireworks, trips to the beach, and national media events such as the Indianapolis 500 auto race, held since 1911 on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend

Early History

The practice of decorating soldiers' graves with flowers is an ancient custom. Soldiers' graves were decorated in the U.S. before and during the U.S. Civil War.[6]There is documentation that women in Savannah, Georgia decorated soldiers' graves in 1862.[7] In 1863, the cemetery dedication at Gettysburg, PA was a ceremony of commemoration at the graves of dead soldiers. Local historians in Boalsburg, PA, claim that ladies there decorated soldiers' graves on July 4, 1864.[8]As a result, Boalsburg promotes itself as the birthplace of Memorial Day.[9]
Following President Abraham Lincoln's assassination in April 1865, there were a variety of events of commemoration. The first known observance of a Memorial Day-type observance was in Charleston, South Carolina on May 1, 1865. During the war, Union soldiers who were prisoners of war had been held at the Charleston Race Course; at least 257 Union prisoners died there and were hastily buried in unmarked graves.[10] Together with teachers and missionaries, Blacks in Charleston organized a May Day ceremony in 1865, which was covered by the New York Tribune and other national papers. The freedmen had cleaned up and landscaped the burial ground, building an enclosure and an arch labeled, "Martyrs of the Race Course." Nearly ten thousand people, mostly freedmen, gathered on May 1 to commemorate the dead. Involved were 3,000 schoolchildren newly enrolled in freedmen's schools, mutual aid societies, Union troops, and black ministers and white northern missionaries. Most brought flowers to lay on the burial field. Today the site is used as Hampton Park.[11]. Years later, the celebration would come to be called the "First Decoration Day" in the North.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE INTERNET

17 MAYO / MAY 17
 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE INTERNET

In 2006, the United Nations adopted designating May 17 as WorldTelecommunication and Information Society. But the origin of the celebration goes back to 2005.
The Association of Internet Users (AUI) decided in 2005 to grant a day to celebrate the possibilities offered by the network to the people around the world.

The first celebration they called Internet Day took place on October 25, 2005. More than 400 events in all communities of Spain joined the celebration.

Managed public and private entities that signed the Declaration of Principles for building the Information Society, representing more than one million citizens.

But the most important milestone came on March 27, 2006. The United Nations in the Second World Summit on Information Society, approved designate May 17 as World Telecommunication andInformation Society.

"We need to help increase awareness of Internet to become a trulyglobal resource accessible to the public. On 17 May, WorldInformation Society will be held annually and will serve to raise awareness about the importance of this resource, especially the possibilities that ICTs can offer to societies and economies, anddifferent ways to reduce the digital divide. "

As I raised the AUI, Internet Day "comes from society, by societyand society. It is open to voluntary participation and free for all without discrimination. Because Internet Day is a joint effort. "

It is therefore an event to disseminate further the possibilitiesoffered by new technologies to improve the living standards of peoples and citizens.

There are no guidelines for specific activities: each association may define what it does and how.
