17 MAYO / MAY 17
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE INTERNET
In 2006, the United Nations adopted designating May 17 as WorldTelecommunication and Information Society. But the origin of the celebration goes back to 2005.
The Association of Internet Users (AUI) decided in 2005 to grant a day to celebrate the possibilities offered by the network to the people around the world.
The first celebration they called Internet Day took place on October 25, 2005. More than 400 events in all communities of Spain joined the celebration.
Managed public and private entities that signed the Declaration of Principles for building the Information Society, representing more than one million citizens.
But the most important milestone came on March 27, 2006. The United Nations in the Second World Summit on Information Society, approved designate May 17 as World Telecommunication andInformation Society.
"We need to help increase awareness of Internet to become a trulyglobal resource accessible to the public. On 17 May, WorldInformation Society will be held annually and will serve to raise awareness about the importance of this resource, especially the possibilities that ICTs can offer to societies and economies, anddifferent ways to reduce the digital divide. "
As I raised the AUI, Internet Day "comes from society, by societyand society. It is open to voluntary participation and free for all without discrimination. Because Internet Day is a joint effort. "
It is therefore an event to disseminate further the possibilitiesoffered by new technologies to improve the living standards of peoples and citizens.
There are no guidelines for specific activities: each association may define what it does and how.
